Falls Prevention Program

Name: Tai Chi Classes

Where: Area senior centers in Dane County

About the Program: Tai Chi is a mind and body exercise which originated in ancient China and has been shown to have many health benefits. Developed by Dr. Paul Lam and his team of medical and tai chi experts, Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention is a gentle form supported by arthritis foundations around the world, and recognized by the CDC as effective in fall prevention. In terms of physical exertion, the tai chi exercise in this class would be similar to walking. The movements are to be done in a comfortable range of motion. They can be modified as needed in terms of balance, as they can be done standing without hand support, with the use of hand support, or in the seated position. Comfortable clothing and well fitting, flat footwear are all that is required. The class is conducted by an instructor certified by the Tai Chi for Health Institute. As with any new exercise, participants are to seek clearance from their care provider prior to participating.
